A Harlingen homeowner is fed up with an abandoned lot behind his backyard. He says the grass has not been cut in years and wants the city to solve his problem.
Antonio Gonzalez describes this lot as a jungle, a jungle that's been a problem for almost a decade. Gonzalez says animals creep into his yard and even go further in. He has caught two possums on his rooftop and other animals inside his home. Gonzalez claims he has complained to city officials but all he has gotten are false promises. He says officials have told him they would send someone over to cut the grass but he's yet to see anyone until Friday.
We went out to the lot with Harlingen’s Code Enforcement Supervisor Elida Mendoza. She says the owner of the lot, Albert Investments, a company based out of McAllen, has been notified about the situation and a letter was sent out last week. The owner of the lot has until next Wednesday to cut the grass. If that doesn't happen, the city will cut it, bill the owner and put a lien on the lot until the bill is paid.
While we talked to Mendoza today, she also noticed Gonzalez was violating a city ordinance. Mendoza is mailing a letter to Gonzalez to have the tires and trailer removed before he gets a citation.
