Cameron County Worried Levees Will Breach

By Michelle Macias

With dolly expected to bring heavy rain, there's fear about levees breaching. The Cameron County Judge has not called a mandatory evacuation to residents who live in low lying areas but is urging them to go someplace else. County officials are afraid that the estimated 10 to 20 inches of rain will create big problems for the entire county. During a planning session, Cameron County’s Emergency Management Coordinator, Johnny Cavazos, explained that Dolly is taking the same pattern that Hurricane Beulah did in 1967. Hurricane Beulah devastated the Rio Grande Valley and that is a concern county officials have with Dolly.

“We all must remember that the levees aren't as high as they were 41 years ago. We’re very concerned about the levees and deterioration of those in the last 41 years.”

With the levees in the county not in the best shape, officials fear those levees will breach. Cameron County Judge, Carlos Cascos, says flooding is the biggest deal right now.

“people that live in low lying areas need to leave or else they're going to be trapped there for a while until we're able to get our vehicles in there trying to help them out.”

And some people we talked to are doing just that. Maria Gonzalez and her family have everything ready to leave to her sister's house in San Benito.

“She’s got a better house and it's best for us to go over there.”

And 25-year-old mother of three, Lillian Gonzalez, is doing the same, but she's headed further away.
She’s going up to San Antonio. Her parents have boarded up windows and bought the basic necessities. The house where Gonzalez lives is right behind a levee, as leaving as quickly as possible is the best idea.

But Gracie Flores and her family will brace the storm right at home. Her husband is beginning to board up windows. Her house is also behind a levee but she's not so worried yet.

“In case we do see that it gets really bad then we might take action and leave.”

Judge Cascos has not ordered a mandatory evacuation to residents who live in low lying areas but he is urging them to leave and head to higher ground.
