Crime Stoppers Has Made Streets Safe

By Mark Nino

Stopping crime on Brownsville streets is what police are fighting for, but they know they can't do it alone.

Since 1983 Crime Stoppers has been taking criminals off Brownsville streets and it's tips from resident, police say, that are really making a huge difference. Last month alone close to 300 callers called the hot line and three of those tipsters were rewarded cash.

Callers tipping off Brownsville police is on the rise and Crime Stoppers coordinator, Sgt. Gerard Serrata says, so far this year they've paid out $4,000 dollars in cash. Heroin, cocaine, graffiti are all what officers hope their cash for clues hot line will stop. These phone calls, he says, are definitely wanted.

If you have a crime tip, the number to call is 546-TIPS. A $1,000 dollar reward is given, if your tip, leads to an arrest. Now you might find it interesting to know, that even though, you're calling a local number, Serrata says, the call is actually picked up at a call center in Canada.
