Highest Breast Cancer Death Rate In Texas

Out of the 254 counties in the State, Hidalgo county stands out. But not for a good reason.
According to the Texas Cancer Registry data for 2010, breast cancer deaths are high in the Upper Valley.
As a matter of fact, Hidalgo county has more deaths than any other county in the State.

"The Rio Grande Valley has been neglected as far as finding out cancer awareness and people getting their mammogram," says Shirley Arnolde.

Shirley Arnold is the Chairperson for the Nurse Oncology Education Program.
The non-profit project teamed up with Lone Star Bank for a sickness prevention campaign.
All in hopes of educating the Upper Valley about breast cancer.

"This project was brought down here basically to get more awareness in the McAllen area because the mortality rate for breast cancer is high in this area. Number one what we're trying to do is educate in the importance of screening, getting your mammogram, self exams and having your doctor do breast exams," says Arnolde.

Several women came in earlier today to sign up for the program.
Organizers say many women don't get their annual mammogram because of the hefty price. The program hopes to alleviate the cost for many women in the Upper Valley.
