Local Pharmacy Struggling with State Medicaid Cuts
RIO GRANDE VALLEY — State Medicaid funding cuts are beginning to take a toll on local pharmacies since lawmakers cut Medicaid funding and turned everything over to private companies causing doctors offices and pharmacies have been struggling to keep their doors open. Vela's Pharmacy, located in McAllen, reports that the effect on their business has cut profits by 80% and owner Fabian Vela stated, "We had to cut out our group health insurance, we had to cut to just cut our expenses where we could. We had to adjust our basic insurance policies, we tried to renegotiate our rents, we had to cut back where ever we can. We had to cut back several employees, I know we lost several employees." The state legislature doesn't return back into session until January of 2013 and Vela hopes lawmakers will look at the job losses and change the current policy.
