WASHINGTON - The first day of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. has concluded.
A student from Edinburg is making the Rio Grande Valley proud. Veena Namboodiri is in the first stage of the competition. Veena has been in spelling bees since she was in elementary school. Now at the South Texas Preparatory Academy in Edinburg, she is on the big stage at the 91st Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The 13-year-old won the right to go to Washington, D.C. by winning the regionals that took place at TSTC in Harlingen in March. Namboodiri will be one of 519 students to participate.
