Port of Brownsville Candidate Forum

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Citizens Against Voter Abuse, an organization that seeks to keep taxpayers informed will hold a Brownsville Navigation District Candidate Forum April 17.

“We’re doing so to give the public a chance to hear what each candidate has for a platform, what they intend to bring to the table for the Port of Brownsville and for the taxpayers of Brownsville,” said Mary Helen Flores, CAVA Administrator.

Including their stance on the future of a company that has caused much debate in the Rio Grande Valley.

“It’s very important for our voters to know the stance of every candidate, on every issue especially the (Liquefied Natural Gas) issue because that will determine the direction of our economy and environmental for years to come,” Flores said.

Referring to the three LNG facilities seeking to come to the Port of Brownsville.

At the State of the Port last month, future projects were discussed, including channel deepening.

"Deepening the channel will be like if you have an airport. And if you expand the runway, that means bigger planes can land. If you have more planes, it means you have more cargo or more people, the same thing will occur if you deepen the channel,” said Port Director Eduardo Campirano.

Also discussed at the meeting was the $1.5 billion Valley Crossing Pipeline project, another issue causing controversy in the Rio Grande Valley.

“The Port of Brownsville has a huge economic and environmental impact on our region,” Flores said.

The Brownsville Navigation District Candidate Forum will take place tomorrow at 6:30 PM at the Southmost Public Library.
