EDINBURG, Texas - The Hidalgo County Elections Department is seeking to extend countywide polling and make it permanent.
With the permission of the Texas Secretary of State last month, the elections department put to the test a new program that allowed residents to vote outside their precincts.
The county elections administrator labeled the countywide polling a success due to the good voter turnout. With a decrease in the number of people turned away for being at the wrong polling location, officials are now hoping to have the countywide polling again for future elections.
Hilda Salinas, Elections Analyst said, "We are in the process of filing an application to become permanent, and of course this is something that is beneficial to voters, because it offers a convenience. They don't have to worry about driving to their precinct location, they can just go and vote at any polling location nearby."
The Hidalgo County Elections Department is hoping to get approval for permanent countywide polling before the elections in March.
