MCALLEN, Texas - Apprehensions for illegal border crossings at the U.S. – Mexico border are on the rise.
Last month the RGV Sector reported more than 6,300 arrests, compared to 973 in May 2017. The total for the current fiscal year, which began in October 2017 is a little over 59,000. The number of unaccompanied children trying to cross the southern border in the current fiscal year is at 32,372.
Agent Marcelino Medina, RGV Border Patrol Sector, "As we see these record numbers of apprehensions here in the Rio Grande Valley, we do account for other symptoms of this porous border. We see more stash houses being identified and more tractor trailer cases going through checkpoints.”
Border Patrol officials add that the collaboration with other federal and local agencies has helped them reach these high number of apprehensions.
