Local leaders file separate bills on water district fees
AUSTIN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Two local politicians have filed separate bills which would modernize how water districts assess fees.
Senator Lucio Jr. (D-Brownsville) and his son Eddie Lucio III (D-Harlingen) filed Senate Bill 611 and House Bill 1214 which would change the manner in which all water districts determine the amount of flat rate assessment against the irrigable land they serve.
In the past, water districts served various clients, from local farmers to local public utiliities, but due to urbanization those water districts are now delivering raw untreated water to cities.
Senate Bill 611 and House Bill 1214 would allow water districts to determine flat rate assessments by taking into account the amount of expected expenses which are associated with both the district's irrigation and city water delivery services.
