It's a worldwide disease that's claiming the lives of 8.6 million women each year, but on Friday the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen is celebrating National Wear Red day to raise heart disease awareness among women.

Dr. Guillermo Salinas is a Cardiologist at Rio Grande Regional Hospital, he says. "Heart disease is one of the major killers among the female population and sometimes that is not thought of the same among the community. " That's because many still see this disease as being more prevalent among men.  And here locally along with diabetes and obesity it's rising concern.

Kathy Dassler is the Chief Nursing Officer at Rio Grande Regional Hospital she sees alot of women treated for heart disease and understand the major impact it's having.  Dassler says,
"Coming in through the emergency department, seeing their family physicians, they're coming in to have cardiac catheterization to determine if they have heart disease. "

Doctors say eating healthy along with exercise is important,  because once you have heart disease you have it forever.   Doctors also say it's also important to control you cholesterol, high blood pressure, and any other risk factors which can impact your cardiovascular health.
