The Texas Department of Agriculture has awarded grant money to a Valley farmer in an effort create and expand agriculture businesses.

Commissioner Todd Staples awarded 18 young farmers and ranchers, one of them being Juan Raygoza, from Hidalgo, grant money from the Young Farmer Grant program, which is funded by farmers in the state.

The Young Farmer Grant program offers user-friendly financing options to help establish new young farmers, between the ages of 18 and 45, with grant amounts between $5,000 and $10,000 to expand agricultural businesses.

"With many farmers and ranchers hitting the retirement age, we need to recruit younger Texans to fill their boots,” Commissioner Staples said. “The Young Farmer Grant Program, which is funded entirely by Texas farmers and ranchers, offers user-friendly, effective financing options that can help establish new young farmers and ranchers.”
