Lights Out For Turtles
Turtle nesting season is underway along the Florida coast.
Sea turtles have returned to Central Florida beaches for nesting season, and advocates said they are hoping for a successful year.
May marks the start of sea turtle nesting season.
Officials said five nests have already been spotted along the Volusia County coastline.
To help the population along, beachgoers are asked to clean up after themselves.
They said trash left on the shore can pose a threat to the sea creatures.
"Any kind of obstacles left on the beach -- beach furniture, holes people are using to make castles -- they can actually be problematic and turtles can get trapped and injured," Jennifer Winters, of Volusia County Turtle Management, said.
Sea turtle nesting season runs from May through October.
