Training day for several officers from around the Western part of Hidalgo and Starr county.

These officers encounter various crimes daily from car chases, drug and human smuggling and even Mexican cartel violence that may spill onto the U.S. side of the border. These officers are the first to respond and need to be well prepared for any type of dangerous criminal event.

The Response to Resistance training is designed to enhance the communication skills and decision making abilities of the police officers. One of the tools used in Wednesday's training is a simulator that allows them to perfect their skills. The goal of the training is to better describe why force is being used and challenges the officers to articulate the force used different criminal scenarios and hoping they make the right choice.

The level of crime in the upper Valley is tremendous and Todd Townsend, TML trainer, says that choosing the correct option or having a backup plan can be crucial to the officer's and civilian safety.
