The stakes could not be higher.

"It will greatly increase the value of what it means to live in Brownsville."

That's the view of Rio Grande Valley students who flocked to the final public hearing on the SpaceX project to voice their support.

"Working with SpaceX...this is just my passion and it's something that's gonna come down here, Brownsville...and be where I am - that's great!"

SpaceX could generate as many as 600 direct local jobs with average annual salaries of $55,000. UTB physics professor Fredrick Jenet says SpaceX could be a game changer for Brownsville.

"You cannot find this anywhere in the world where we're going to have the juxtaposition of a university together with this commercial spaceflight entity. We're sort of coming together to build programs around this that are gonna offer our students enormous opportunities to become a part of near and deep space exploration, to become part of this new, this next chapter."

An estimated 500 citizens showed up at the hearing. While a few voiced environmental and property value concerns, most said their attitude toward SpaceX is "all systems go."
