La Joya teen killed in car crash

A teenage boy is dead and his brother seriously injured after a fatal accident in La Joya yesterday.

The crash happened on South Kika De La Garza Boulevard near 9 1/2 street. 

It claimed the life of Marco Antonio Martinez, 17, who was expected to graduate in May from La Joya West Academy.

Police are still trying to determine the cause, but believe speed may have been a factor.

No other cars were involved.

The crash is still under investigation.

The La Joya ISD did release a statement on the death of Marco Antonio Martinez stating:

"The community, students and staff of La Joya ISD send their deepest and most sincere condolences to the family of Marco Antonio Martinez a 17 year old senior who was expected to graduate this year from La Joya West Academy. La Joya ISD stands in solidarity with the family, and appropriate resources have been made available to them in this time of hardships. Our Counseling Department has extended its services to students, staff, and family members to help cope with this tragic loss. Counseling staff will be on hand at the campus throughout the day as students hold various activities in his memory and for grieving students and staff as well. La Joya ISD is a resilient community, and in times like this we come together, support each other, and help one another move forward."
