A 16-year-old student was killed last night after a vehicle fatally hit her as she was exiting a school bus.

It happened Monday night at approximately 7:35 p.m.

The teen who died in the accident is identified as Brenda Cuellar, a student at Palmview High School.

DPS Sgt. Johnny Hernandez stated that Cuellar was leaving the school bus and walking across the street when she was struck by a vehicle.  Preliminary investigation reveals that the bus was stopped on the southbound lane of La Homa Road.  The bus driver activated the red flashing lights to drop off the female student.

As the student was crossing the roadway, the driver of a Chevrolet Cobalt traveling northbound on La Homa Road failed to stop for the school bus and hit the 16-year-old girl.

Cuellar was transported to McAllen Medical Center in serious condition.  She later passed away from her injuries.

The driver of the Cobalt was taken to Mission Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

La Joya ISD spokesperson Eden Ramirez confirms that the late drop-off time is attributed to after school activities--Cuellar was a soccer player at Palmview High School.

DPS troopers are still investigating the accident.  At this time, no charges have been filed against the driver.
