La Joya 7th grader wins first place at science and engineering fair

Josiah Zapata, Chavez Middle School 7th grade student in La Joya ISD, received 1st place at the Exxon Mobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair in San Antonio, TX on March 27th thru 29th .

Zapata’s project “iFly: The Non-Ionizing Radioactive Effects of Apple Inc. Products on Drosophila Melanogaster” in which he won first place at the State Fair in the category of: Cellular and Molecular Biology, toped students from across the state.

Students qualified to compete in the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair by winning grand prize or first- through third-place honors at one of 12 regional fairs held across Texas. Each regional fair is sanctioned by Science Service, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of science among people of all ages.
