Kids In The Car
Tennessee woman charged with reckless driving after speeding away from roller rink with packed vehicle.
A Tennessee mother is charged with reckless driving while having 13 children in the back of her Ford Explorer, but she says she did nothing wrong the night she was arrested.
Police responding to a fight at Memphis' Crystal Palace Roller Rink say they saw Treshundra Barnes, 25, driving at a high rate of speed while serving back and forth, nearly hitting several children.
They say none of the 13 children in the car were wearing seat belts.
"That never happened at all," Barnes said. "The only thing I was doing was hitting the brakes. Speeding I wasn't doing, but I was constantly hitting my brakes, turning around, trying to calm my kids down."
While the car was moving, police say several kids were hanging out the windows, screaming and waving their hands at officers.
"They was loud and making a lot of noise, yes, they was distracting me, but I slowed down," Barnes said. "Trying to calm them down and get their attention but before I gathered everybody together and calmed them down, he had already pulled me over."
Barnes won't be driving for awhile after another incident over the weekend.
She says a man with a gun carjacked her during a the incident, and her Ford Explorer is now being held as evidence.
This is Barnes' first reckless driving charge.
She is also facing fourteen counts of violating the seat belt law, and she's charged with not having a driver's license.
