Kidnapped Woman Leaps To Safety
Woman jumps from second story window to escape rapist who held her prisoner.
Police have arrested a Hamilton, Ohio man accused of holding a woman against her will for more than a week and raping her repeatedly.
Officers were called Friday to a home where a woman said 44-year-old William Manis attacked her.
The woman admits she works as a prostitute and went willingly to the home November 16, but she said she did not expect what happened next.
"I started screaming and fighting, and he grabbed me up by my hair and threw me in the closet and started beating me with a pair of handcuffs until I quit moving and talking," the woman said. "He would slam it so it was all the way shut, and he would take a nail and hammer it in the door so it wouldn't open."
The woman told police that Manis bound her hands, feet and mouth and held her in the closet for 10 days, and she said that he raped her 18 times during that period.
"He would put handcuffs on my hands and on my feet, and when people would come over he would hogtie me up put a sock in my mouth, another sock around my face and rope around the sock so I couldn't talk or move," the woman said.
The woman said she doesn't believe Manis intended to kill her, although she said he gagged her once until she couldn't breathe.
"He said I was seconds away from dying, so I don't think his intention was to let me die, I think it was to keep me as his pet," she said.
She said Manis told her he planned to sell her as a sex slave.
"His mind is sick; he's not right in the head," she said. "I was terrified for my life, but he told me if I ever tried to get away or if I made any noises he would hit me in the head with a hammer and kill me."
The woman said an unexpected visit by her captor's landlord provided the chance she needed to escape.
"He forgot to nail the door shut, so when I heard him leave I opened the door and jumped out the window," she said.
Police arrested Manis hours later and charged him with one count of kidnapping and 18 counts of rape.
He remains in police custody at the Butler County Jail.
