Assisted suicide advocate known as "Dr. Death" succumbs to lengthy illness.

Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the assisted suicide advocate known as "Dr. Death" for his public campaign in favor of euthanasia, has died at the age of 83.

Kevorkian claimed he used his own suicide machine to help at least 130 people die.

He was arrested dozens of times, but for years prosecutors were not able to get a conviction.

In 1998 "60 Minutes" aired a video tape of Kevorkian actually administering a lethal injection to a Michigan man.

He was arrested again and this time was convicted of second degree murder.

In prison Kevorkian became increasingly frail, but remained committed to euthanasia.

"It is a right, you should have the choice," he maintained.

He was released in June 2007, still believing that his thinking was ahead of the times and eventually his controversial plans for assisted suicide would eventually gain wider acceptance.
