PHARR, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Friends and loved ones continue to mourn a soldier killed in Afghanistan.
The body of army specialist Kevin Cardoza arrived in Pharr on Tuesday. Cardoza was killed in Afghanistan earlier this month. The memorial followed a parade earlier in the day. The parade visited several schools, including ones in his hometown of Mercedes.
"He's a brother in arms," said David Belmontes, who never met Cardoza, but serves in the same unit. "As being active duty as well as serving, I know what the family is going through, I know it very hard. I'm just here showing my respect."
"It feels sad to be here, for what they are going through," Cardoza's second cousin Nora Flores said in Spanish. "But we have to be even though we feel the way we feel, to support them until the end."
The memorial in Pharr was open to the public. However, the family asked media not to attend, so Newscenter 23 honored their wishes.
