Keeping Class Fun
Teacher returns to his tiny hometown to help make school an "escape" from poverty.
Center, Colorado is a tiny town that sits in the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
It's one of the poorest communities in Colorado, but you sure can't tell when you visit the Center Consolidated School.
It's brand new and is full of very smart kids, and very good teachers.
Joe Martinez is one of them.
Mr. Martinez teaches physical education and coaches.
He know a lot about what his students are going through.
He went to school in Center, and he came from one of the very poor families in town.
He says school to him was an escape.
It's why he works so hard making sure the kids have fun, get exercise and learn a healthy lifestyle.
The other teaches respect him so much and the kids adore him.
To most he's not Mr. Martinez, he's just Joe.
He's their teacher, their friend, and their neighbor.
He'll do anything he can to help them in or out of the classroom.
