Judie Geil named first Master Chef of Mission

The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) and Mission Staycation Day announce Judie Geil as the first Master Chef of Mission, Texas. Geil’s Citrus Salad Recipe won the inaugural culinary showdown at the March Mission Staycation Day farmer’s market on March 2.

“Mission’s first Master Chef Competition was a great success. All of our competitors wrote delicious recipes that were sampled by Mission’s top chefs. Several of the products featured at the Chamber’s farmers market will now be featured as ingredients on menus across the city,” said Matt Z. Ruszczak, GMCC President and CEO.

In addition to being named the reigning Master Chef of Mission, Geil’s recipe will be featured on five menus in the greater Mission area including, Renee’s of Sharyland, Cimarron Country Club, The Republic of the Rio Grande, Ace’s BBQ and Florian Coffee Room and Boutique.

“We enjoy being involved with the community, and what better way than to showcase a recipe created by a home cook using our local produce?” said David Aguilar of Ace’s BBQ.

Geil’s salad featured a combination of Rio Grande Valley oranges, lemons and grapefruits grown by Mission’s Marshall Farms and a mixture of local greens. The dressing was made with a combination of mango citrus-vinegar, mango-habanero mustard and lime and citrus zest. Geil topped the salad with feta cheese, pomegranate seeds and bacon.

“I want to promote healthy living by using our local produce, and at the same time this will be a salad people will enjoy,”
said Santiago De La Cruz “Chef Jimmy” of Cimarron Country Club.

Geil is no stranger to local farmers markets. Each weekend, you can find Geil sampling and selling hand-crafted mustards, vinegars, spices and much more made by St. George’s Orthodox Church in Pharr, Texas.

Participating restaurants are preparing their kitchens to serve Geil’s winning salad. Look for it menus in the coming weeks. “Like” the GMCC on Facebook to be the first to know when the official serving date is announced.

Mission Staycation Day is Mission’s local farmers market and is held on the first Saturday of each month from 3-6 p.m. at the GMCC in downtown Mission. The market features over 20 vendors selling local produce, food and artisan items.
