RIO GRANDE VALLEY- Reports show self reported stress levels are down across the nation for the first time in 5 years. One local expert disagrees when it comes to the valley.

"If a family can't get a job, you can't get resources and the stress comes into the family," said Dr. De Ferreire, clinical psychologist.

Dr. De Ferreire treats several patients. She says thousands of people are stressed out in the valley mostly because of their finances. The area we live in also plays a major role.

"We have a lot of trauma from the high levels of violence we see here," she said. "We have a spillover effect from the Mexican citizens seeking refuge and solace and safe security so they can have their families here."

Another cause of stress in this area is that over 40% of Hidalgo County is living in poverty and until that changes stress levels and depression will continue to rise. Dr. De Ferriere says thats something that shouldn't be the norm and we can begin to live stress free lives with the help of our leaders and together as a community.
