Researchers say mind tricks can help you eat less.

Wanna melt away the holiday weight?

Use your imagination!

Doctors are proposing a new way to cut cravings.

A new study out of Carnegie Mellon University found fantasizing about food keeps you from
over-indulging.

The study asked a group of people to imagine eating 30 M&Ms and another group to think about placing quarters into a slot.

Both groups then got a bowl of M&Ms.

The group that had imagined the M&Ms, ate half as many as those who had been thinking about quarters.

"When you're thinking about something, you're being a little bit more careful and therefore you end up not mindlessly eating," says family physician Dr. Doug Cluff.

Cluff says the study makes sense and losing weight is 80 percent what you eat.

The average American gains 1.7 pounds a year, and the majority of that weight is gained during the holidays.
