I Knew Something Bit Me
College student describes shark attack.
A Texas college student is recovering after a shark attack.
Kori Robertson and her friends celebrated Memorial Day on Follet's Island on the north side of Surfside Beach.
The 22-year-old University of Houston student said she was in waist-deep water when a shark bit her.
Robertson's friends wrapped her leg in a towel and rushed her from Surfside Beach to University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
Robertson realized she was very fortunate.
"I was really lucky," Robertson said. "There were people that I've seen that lost their legs, and like, lost chunks of their skin. I'm going to be lucky to just walk away, hopefully -- if there's no infection -- with just scars. That's pretty awesome from what I've seen."
Robertson can walk and does not expect any permanent damage.
The Florida Museum of Natural History records show only one recorded shark attack off the Brazoria County coast in the past 100 years.
In that time, there have been a total of 34 unprovoked shark attacks along the local coast.
That included two in Matagorda County and 14 in Galveston County.
One in Galveston County was fatal.
