Homeland Security releasing detained illegal immigrants due to sequestration
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — The Department of Homeland Security is releasing some illegal immigrants who are held in immigration jails in advance of the possible sequestration cuts.
According to ICE Deputy Press Secretary Gillian Christensen, over the last week, ICE has reviewed several hundred cases and placed those individuals on methods of supervision less costly than detention. She adds that priority for detention remains on serious criminal offenders and other individuals who pose a significant threat to public safety.
NewsCenter 23 cannot report if any detained immigrants, from the Port Isabel Detention Center, have been released at this time.
