A Guinness world record was broken on Thursday morning at a Red Ribbon Week ceremony in Mission.

Students and faculty of Sharyland high school broke the record for the longest awareness ribbon in the world. The event was created to help raise awareness of the dangers of drugs and alcohol. The ribbon not only broke the current world record, it shattered it.

This was the first time this particular category was attempted in the United States and the event was sponsored by McAllen NTC Drug and Alcohol Testing.

Just a correction here, NTC Drug & Alcohol Testing Services were the ones who broke the record. They applied to Guinness WR, got the permission, brought the judge down, and had the ribbon made. Sharyland did help in providing the venue and students, but the record was actually broken by NTC.
