Hidalgo County Officials Testify at Re-Districting Court
HIDALGO COUNTY - It's back to the drawing board for Hidalgo county as election officials plea with the state to establish an official re-districting map.
Election officials traveled to San Antonio on Friday to testify about the importance of re-districting in Hidalgo county which would allow local cities to confirm official line and granting voters critical election information. The department also discussed a possible second primary this year which could cause a major budget constraint for the county which can only be determined once the maps are drawn and ready to go.
In the meantime, officials are pushing the state to clear up the confusion so voters are well informed, come election day. Hidalgo County Elections Administrator Yvonne Ramon stated, "Without being able to tell them what election precinct represents them, we're not able to tell them what state rep represents them, what Senator represents them, what U.S. Congressman represents them. Without being able to do that, at this point, the voter is at a loss of information we aren't able to provide."
The county elections department hopes to start sending out new voter certificates as soon as the re-districting maps are completed and asking voters not to re-register until further notice.
