Hidalgo County Launches Website for Residents to Pay Fines and Fees
After years of seeing unpaid citations rack up Hidalgo county is launching an online program so residents can pay off their increasing debt.
It's called Operation Clean Slate and the site has a listing of unpaid debt, since 2000, from residents and listing a total of $35 million dollars that is owed to the county. The new operation will give those who owe fines or fees an easy way to "clean their slate." A quick demonstration was given at the court house on how to use the website and city officials said some residents have already started using the site and paying fines or fees.
Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia stated, " We've had our first payment of $280 dollars fine and fee that has been owed for quite some time that came n today at the county." The site shows all outstanding fees from January 2000 to April 2011. People have sixty days to pay their fines, after that, those left unpaid will not be able to renew their drivers license or their vehicle registration. Then if the fine still isn't paid the county has hired a law firm to start collection proceedings.
