The Hidalgo County jail is overcrowded, and taxpayers are paying for it.

A Commander with the Sheriff's Office says the jail has been overcrowded since the day it opened in 2004.

The Sheriff's Office deals with the overflow by busing inmates to jails in neighboring counties. While the cost of doing this fluctuates, it can cost taxpayers upward of $5,000 a day.

The Hidalgo County jail is already the biggest jail in the Rio Grande Valley.

"We've done our best to manage that, it's really a logistical challenge," Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office Commander Joel Rivera said. "Because we have inmates that are being housed out of county that we have to bring here locally because they have another court date."

Former Sheriff Lupe Treviño lobbied for the county to build a larger jail. The current administration says it understands the financial realities of such a large project.
