Heroic K Suffers Tragic Death
Dog credited with saving soldier's life in Afghanistan accidentally euthanized by shelter.
A dog rescued by a soldier serving in Afghanistan was accidentally put down by an animal shelter in Arizona.
To Terry Young, Target was more than a furry stray he found in Afghanistan, she was family.
Back in February the dog quite possibly saved his life.
Young says Target sprang into action when a suicide bomber entered his unit's camp, alerting the troops to the man's presence.
Not a single soldier was killed.
Six months later Target was flown to Arizona and reunited with Terry.
The two quickly became celebrities.
Target had a massive following and a new home, but last Friday night went missing.
Found by a neighbor, Target ended up at Pinal County Animal Care and Control.
When Terry went to pick her up the director broke the news.
The dog had been euthanized by mistake.
Animal Care and Control say a worker failed to follow proper procedures.
An investigation is underway, and the director has apologized, but for Terry there are no words to ease the pain.
"That dog and I went through so much over there, just what she meant to me, like I said she was part of our family," he says.
