Statistics show nearly half a million children in Texas are not being read to regularly which can ultimately have an effect on their vocabulary and language skills.

A new program sponsored by HEB, named Read 3 Campaign, has been set up to address that issue. The early childhood literacy campaign will stress the importance of reading to children at least three times per week. The campaign will work to educate caregivers and parents as well as provide the tools needed for reading books.

Brownsville Mayor, Tony Martinez, stated, "We have a tendency perhaps maybe to think they're too little to start learning, but they're never too little, right now they need to start pre-K to get prepared for the global economy."
