MCALLEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — You now have some extra time to sign up for healthcare before Monday's deadline.
The deadline to sign up for coverage as part of the Affordable Care Act had been March 31.
It still is, but if you start your application by then, you'll have until mid-April to avoid penalties.
"If you have a car without insurance, you will be fined and starting March 31, afterward if you don't have insurance, you may be fined," Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-28th) said. "There's certain hardship provisions, certain ways out, but generally speaking, a small fine will be applied."
Cuellar suggests going to the McAllen library if you still plan on signing up.
There are people there who can help you with the enrolling process.
