Health authorities believe the swine flu has killed as many as 60 people in Mexico and around a thousand have been infected.

It has started to spread into the U.S. with reports of 8 people infected in California and Texas. Schools, museums, libraries and theaters were closed across Mexico City on Friday to prevent the spread of the virus. Concerned residents are even wearing surgical masks to avoid infection and half a million flu vaccines will be administered to health workers which are at greater risk of contacting the virus.

Researchers say the swine flu combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way they've never seen before and they are concerned it could spread quickly because people have no natural defenses for it and turn into a pandemic.
