Women thinking about becoming pregnant in the next year, you may want to start taking folic acid supplements now.

A March of Dimes study shows women who take folic acid for at least 12 months before they conceive are 50% to 70% less likely to have a premature baby. The supplement seems to be especially helpful in preventing very early premature births when babies can be at risk for cerebral palsy, blindness and chronic lung disease.
