Could the eyes be a window for problems in the mind? Scientists are studying possible links between eye disease and cognitive problems in seniors.
Previous research has shown the age related eye condition called Macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s have similarities and both involve a build up of protein fragments and share the same risk factors.
A group of Australian researchers evaluated 2,000 seniors giving them several cognitive tests, checking them for macular degeneration as well as artery disease. They found those who scored lowest on one test involving thinking and learning were twice as likely to have early stages of Macular degeneration.
