Those extra pounds you want to lose could be put to good use as stem cells.
Researchers at Stanford University have converted fat cells into IPS cells. IPS cells are like embryonic stem cells and can be converted into any type of cell in the human body. Similar studies have been done using skin cells, but experts say fat cells were easier to use because they did not need to be grown in a lab and they did not require help from mouse cells.
Researchers hope to use these cells to create customized treatments for patients with heart problems or neurological diseases.
