Time is running out for your elected leaders to pass a bill that doctors say could save lives in the Valley.
A group of doctors gathered on Thursday to highlight the need for primary care providers in the Valley. Dr. Elena Marin says her clinic has four positions open right now and not enough applicants which could mean life or death for some patients. She told a crowd about a patient who could not get in to see a doctor and during her child's appointment, she told Dr. Marin about a lump in her breast. Doctors later diagnosed the woman with breast cancer, but without her child's appointment, she may not have survived.
Dr. Marin says this shortage of doctors will only get worse without incentives for health care providers in the state. Legislators have until June 1st to pass the bill which allows the state to establish a fund to help pay off student loans in exchange for a four year commitment to health care providers for working in the underserved areas in Texas like the Valley.
Doctors want you to write to your elected officials to push for House Bill 1876.
