The number of genetic tests and in the past eight years has more than tripled and yet no federal guidelines have been issued to make sure they're used properly.
The CDC issued that first federal recommendations for accurate and appropriate use of genetic tests. The new guidelines are for clinical and public health professionals and address the testing process, lab responsibilities and what qualifications lab personnel should have. Experts say more Americans are depending on genetic test results to determine their course of treatment or to learn whether they are at risk for certain diseases.
They say an accurate diagnosis is critical and they hope these guidelines will ensure patients get the treatment they need.
