The link between diet and diabetes has been a research topic for decades.now, new studies further explore this relationship.
The first study from the Archives of Internal Medicine looks at the impact of drinking soft and fruit drinks on diabetes among women.
Researchers found women who drank 2 or more soft drinks a day had a 24% increased risk for the disease- those who had two or more fruit drinks had a 31% increase.
A second study shows adults who eat high amounts of fruits and vegetables have an over 60% lower risk for the disease.
Experts measured blood levels of vitamin "c" to determine how many fruits and vegetables participants were eating.
And a quick snapshot of the eyes could serve as an early indicator for diabetes!
Two scientists from the University of Michigan invented a new screening device -- which measures stress and tissue damage in the retina.
The five minute test is able to detect high levels of cellular florescence which is an indicator of diabetes, before the first symptoms of disease show themselves.
Experts say this tool could be a quick way to screen patients for diabetes but a blood glucose test would still be needed to confirm a diagnosis.
