MedCenter 23 Looks at Reducing Cancer Risk for Smokers

By Mark Nino

If you smoke, there are certain foods that could help reduce your risk for lung cancer, plus risky sex is now less likely for college bound students.

Young adults man be less likely to have risky sex if they head to college after their high school graduation. A survey of more than 800 teens found those who attended college within 6 months after completing high school were significantly less likely to engage in casual or risky sex, and much more likely to use condoms than those who did not continue their education. Experts say late adolescence and the early 20's are the peak times for acquiring a sexually transmitted disease. Although sexually activity decreased overall among older teens who lived at home after graduation they were just as likely to have risky sex.

A diet full of fruits, vegetables and tea may help protect smokers from developing lung cancer. That's the latest research from the University of California, Los Angeles, where experts looked at the dietary habits of smokers with and without lung cancer.

Foods that appeared to be especially protective included strawberries, green and black teas, brussels sprouts, apples, beans and onions. While quitting smoking is the best way to reduce the risk for lung cancer, experts say eating more fruits and veggies certainly couldn't hurt.
