MedCenter 23 Looks at Amphetamines and Hear Attacks

By Mark Nino

Adults who abuse certain prescription drugs are at a higher risk for a heart attack and a treatment for glaucoma has positive side effects.

Young people who abuse prescription drugs called amphetamines may be at a greater risk of suffering a heart attack. Amphetamines are stimulants that when sued properly can treat attention problems like ADHD. UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers examined data on more than 3 million young adults who were hospitalized from 2000 to 2003, and found a relationship between amphetamine abuse and heart attacks. It's unclear why overuse of amphetamines might contribute to the heart attack risk, but experts say the drugs can.

A treatment for glaucoma is giving patients an unusual side effect: longer and more lush eyelashes.

Lumigan eye drops, made by Allergan Incorporated works by lowering pressure in the eye, but the company says 80% of patients who've been experienced longer, darker and thicker eyelashes within three weeks of starting treatment.

Now the company has zeroed in on the key lash ingredient and are working on a cosmetic product that would be applied much like an eyeliner. The product could be approved sometime next year.
