Where Does Texas Rank in Kids Health Care

By Mark Nino

A report released today says some states are doing much better than others in caring for children.

The Commonwealth's Fund Report ranked Texas in the bottom 25% in the United States for children health care. Other states that ranked as low are New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Louisiana with Iowa and Vermont ranking the best.

Kids scream at the thought of going to the doctor, now parents in Texas, may just scream too, knowing health care here is not ranked high nation-wide. According to this report, only 22% of children's specialty health care needs are met in Texas.

While only 50% of children receiving dental and preventative health care check-ups annually. The report measures access, quality, cost, and whether poor and minority kids are actually getting the care they desperately need.

The number may alarm parents, one in five Texas children are uninsured and the report found health care is generally better, but more expensive in the Northeast and upper Midwest.

The bottom line is even in the worst ranked areas, there is still quality health care available and in the best areas there's always room for improvement.
