New White House report links marijuana use with depression in teens.
Teen marijuana use is down, but depressed teens are twice as likely to use it. The Office of National Drug Control Policy notes that use of the drug among teenagers has dropped by 25% in the past 7 years, but it emphasizes that more teens use marijuana than all other illegal drugs combined.
The new White House report finds teens who use marijuana as a self medicated solution to depression are 40% more likely to later develop mental illnesses like schizophrenia and 3 times more likely to think about suicide. Those who used pot at least once a month were also more likely to have suicidal thoughts.
The Marijuana Policy Project, which advocates legalizing the drug calls the report dishonest. They argue that just because more marijuana users become mentally ill, it doesn't prove that the drug actually caused it.
