The City of Brownsville continues to prepare the health department to enforce the public smoking ban the city commissioners passed and takes into effect in February. The health department will be educating the public, in the coming months, on the changes of the smoking ban for businesses. Health Department Manager Rodriguez states that health inspectors will make sure all businesses have signs up stating "No Smoking" and make sure there are no ash trays on the premises. If there are complaints, from the public about smoking going on in any establishment, health inspectors will follow up and the establishment could face a fine, "An individual could be fined, it's up to the municipal court, the limit is up to $500 dollars a company or permit and the owner can be fined up to $2,000 dollars."
