HARLINGEN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — "We are the Harlingen Smokebusters. And we choke on your smoke," said the group, composed of Alex Cavazos, Rex Chamberlain, Ariel Cuevas, Joshua Delgado, Jacob Fraga and Jacob Tovar.
They might be in middle school and not legally able to smoke yet, but that hasn't stopped the Harlingen Smokebusters from spreading the word about the dangers of smoking.
"It doesn't just affect younger kids or adults that are of age, it could affect anyone, even middle schoolers, even a child, even babies in the mother's womb,' said Harlingen Smokebusters president Joshua Delgado. "It could really do anything, tobacco use can go to anybody."
The organization is not affiliated with Vela Middle School. The Smokebusters created the group as an extracurricular:
"I like helping the community and I thought this was a good way to start...by spreading the word out against smoking,' said group historian Jacob Fraga.
But every year on the third Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society hosts something called the Great American Smokeout, an event designed to help smokers quit...and the Harlingen Smokebusters are definitely participating.
As part of the Great American Smokeout, the Harlingen Smokebusters will be outside of Burger King to tell people about the dangers of smoking.
"A lot of people go, and we usually like to go to public places to get more people to know about that," said Smokebuster Rex Chamberlain.
"We're gonna be in the Christmas parade for Harlingen and we're gonna be promoting the Harlingen Smokebusters," said Smokebuster Ariel Cuevas.
And before the Smokebusters left for class again, they reiterated their slogan:
"We choke on your smoke."
