On Monday, October 28th a Harlingen resident filed an information report with the Harlingen Police Department concerning a possible “check scam” operation in the area.

The individual had received an envelope in the mail containing a check from Vantage West Credit Union in the amount of $1,890.00.

They then began receiving phone calls and text messages, instructing him to deposit the check, keep $100.00 as payment, and
then return the balance to GPE (5911 Butterfield Dr, Hillside, IL 60162).

He then took the check to a local bank, where it was confirmed to be fake check.

The person(s) sending these checks may be attempting to gain access to personal information. The Harlingen Police Department urges
anyone who receives a check or offers similar in nature to verify and check the validity of the check.

Anyone with questions about this scam or any others can contact the Harlingen Police Department at (956)216-5401 or their local Law Enfo
rcement Agency.
