HARLINGEN - One of the memorable successful seasons ever put together by a Valley high school football team is over.

Players, coaches, family members and fans will never forget the Harlingen Cardinals 2011 run to the state quarterfinals. The previously unbeaten Cardinals fell to San Antonio Madison on Friday night in Kingsville, 42-27. Four turnovers proved more than the Cardinals could overcome and Harlingen ended it's season at 13-1 and takes it's place among the most accomplished teams in Valley history.

Harlingen Football Coach Manny Gomez said, "This one team was extremely special, not just because of what they did on the field, but just the character and the attitudes that they carried off the field as well. They were just great kids and great people. Someday they are going to be great community leaders. You sensed that about this group that they were special in that way. We understand that we gave it our best shot and it is a life lesson, as long as you know that you gave it your best shot."

The Del Rio Rams and the Harlingen Cardinals understand the mentality of the tougher schools in San Antonio. For years the Del Rio Rams have played in the Northside San Antonio school district. Both the Rams and Cardinals have a clear understanding of what is needed to get through the San Antonio. Congrats to the Cardinals for a great season and what a game you boys played against the Rams of Del Rio! A classic!

Harlingen has been setting the standard in what a South Texas border or Texas Valley team has to do to be successful against the San Antonio teams; especially the Northside and Northeastside teams. To be the best you have to play the best, as much as possible throughout the regular season. The mentality of the Northside and Northeastside teams have always been the difference. Playing weak opponents and blowing them out week in and week out does not prepare a team to face these teams from SA.
